My grandfather had this bell. He used it to summon his 8
grandchildren to the dinner table promptly at 5:30. For years I
took this as a gesture of his austerity and penchant for order. I
believed him to be a harsh disciplinarian.
In retrospect, these assumptions are both accurate and false, as
memories tend to be. Somewhat indistinct and triggered by odd
objects, smells or sounds. Such as the bell.
